About Rich Ackerman

Rich Ackerman Photographer and imaging specialist in macro and landscapes. I place extreme emphasis on accuracy in my images but without sacrificing my own unique creativity and love that goes into each image. All the images for sale here are limited editions and numbered. They are also archival, they will last past your lifetime, so no need to worry. They are printed on a high gloss scratch resistant surface and resistant to ultra-violet light, meaning they will not fade after any amount of time. To have the same results would require more costly and image quality reduction lamination. Since I use Dye-sublimation printing and Chromalux materials, I'm not limited to the surfaces I can print on. Everything I do is "100 Proof" Feel free to inquire about other surface types. My bio: I started taking pictures in 1967, shooting everything from the '68 convention to the Jefferson Airplane and a lot of concrete buildings and people. This was incredible time of societal, musical, cultural and architectural transformation. I jumped in with two feet and participated in this transformation. During this time an IIT graduate, Walter Raczynski laid on my brain all kinds of neat stuff -lighting, composition and the whole darkroom schmear. I honed my lab skills in Chicago at K & S, where I learned Dye Transfer printing, and did color and b/w printing for industrial, advertising and fashion clients. I printed to exacting standards work from Caterpillar's Alaskan Pipeline construction project photos to Skrebneski's high fashion models. I started my professional shooting career as Sr. Photographer at Motorola shooting everything from portraits, in-field products and 8 x 10 view camera studio work to extreme close-ups of crystal wafers used in military applications. It was also here I learned the history and technical evolution of photography from Ken Patterson, who introduced me to Brett Weston and collecting (which I still do today). I also gained experience in computer graphics and CAD - two skills that would prove invaluable the remainder of my career in graphics, photo-imaging and the large format digital graphics business. In the early 80's, I helped co-found along with founder Walter Raczynski, Inverse Square Systems, designers and creators of Stroblox, a totally unique digital electronic flash unit. Stroblox along with it's reflector system and motorized lifting tools produced virtually perfect yet adjustable "soft north light" Stroblox resolved several key lighting problems; extremely high light output in a small lightweight package, very fast recycle times, precise, and consistent repeatable results. I also got to work alongside Raczynski again, I learned and acquired the skills and experience of running and managing a business - the good, bad and ugly. I continued my journey in imaging and became involved with computer graphics large format digital graphics and digital pre-press in the evolving digital printing and point of purchase markets in the late 80's and early 90's. To be successful here, it was essential to learn and clearly understand color theory, relationships between original art, how it appears on displays and how it printed on output devices and it's practical applications in digital scanning of transparencies and flat art, wide format printing. The terms ICC profile and color gamuts became part of my vernacular. My tools: This is pretty much my gear. I shoot with Sony's amazing mirrorless technology and chips. I use the Alpha 6000 camera and 3 lenses. The E3.5/30 macro is my mainstay tool, along with 4.5-6.3/55-210 tele and 3.5-5.6/15-50 standard zoom. I also shoot instant/candid/impromptu with my 24mp smartphone. Any post processing tools I use are primarily for cropping, reducing noise (inherent in all aspects of digital work) and accurate color correction. Today at 66, I mostly travel with my wife Rose (Colorado and the Great Lakes) and take pictures only. I spend time with my kids and grandkids and am just starting to fly fish. I'll occasionally be seen singing and playing blues with Smiley however it's become a little tough handling the Jamison's at 3am. Please, enjoy my photographs and images here, and at http://www.imagewithvision.com/ ...rfa soon...
